How to Study the Bible with your littles

The last few months have been a total blur with a whole bunch of disorganization and chaos. If you are like me, then it's been tough and you have been waiting to get back into a routine that includes some sort of normality.

Well, here we are, September. The smell of apples and pencils is in the air and a chance to get back into some sort of routine is upon us.

BUT

Even though everything has been so chaotic there was good. There were some amazing times and discoveries and there were a bunch of things that I want to keep going into our new year.

One of those things is the amount of time I studied the Bible, but not just for me, for my boys as well.

So where so we start? How do I get a five and three year old to sit through reading Exodus or Leviticus? How to I help them understand the words that are spoken and learn how to apply those truths to their little lives?

Spoiler alert - it's was easier then you may think. Trust me. Stay with me I promise!

First, you need to remember these few things;

  1. There is NO Jr. Holy Spirit. We all have the same access to God no matter what our age.
  2. This is important. Like, really important for your kids
  3. Have grace with yourself and your kids. It's not always perfect
  4. Make it a priority and build it into your daily routines (refer back to point 2)
  5. Have fun! The Bible is full of some really cool and fun stories, show your kids that the Bible is NOT boring!

Got those down? We make our kids get dressed, we try to feed them some resemblance of a breakfast every morning, we want to make sure they are prepared for the day or school and we are pretty good at all that. But, more important, mom, make sure they are prepared for life and the world as well.

Next, have a plan!

  1. Pick a time of day you are going to study. For youngers, it could be 5 minutes at breakfast. For older kids maybe it is a longer time before bed.
  2. Pick a topic or a Bible book to go through
  3. Don't just read the bible - talk about it, ask questions, help them apply it and use resources!
  4. Be consistent! Consistency (with grace) is key to building any good habits!

This month on social media we will be looking at the book of Galatians - which talks a whole lot of the importance of grace and law. So, why not study the same thing with your littles?

The fruits of the spirit is one of the most important verses to come out of Galatians because it guides us, as Christ followers, on what type of attitudes and actions we should possess as we grow closer to God. That's why it's just as important for kids - so they can understand what type of behavior God wants them to have.

Remember that whole point about the application? I don't know about you but this is the hardest part for me with my boys. So, instead of using those old chore charts and giving stickers when the take out the garbage or make their beds here's what we use. Because, ultimately, my boys will learn laundry and garbage but who will teach them to have Godly Characteristics?
